Overview

Summer Internship Programme ("SIP") provides summer internship places in insurance companies and insurance broker companies to university students. SIP allows university students to gain a better understanding of the operation of the insurance sector which would facilitate their consideration in deciding their future career. Out of the monthly honorarium for each intern, the Government would contribute up to 80% or $8,000 (whichever is lower) for an internship period of up to three consecutive months to the participating employer. SIP invites application in summer (i.e. June to August). 

 


Eligible Applicants

  • A resident of the HKSAR and lawfully employable in Hong Kong; and
  • An undergraduate or postgraduate student who enrolled in a fulltime accredited programme provided by a local education institution; or
  • A sub-degree final year student who received a conditional offer from a full-time locally accredited degree programme

Selection Procedure

Applicants are required to submit application form together with a copy of student card, academic transcript, as well as curriculum vitae and cover letter(s) to VTC on or before the application deadline. Applicants may also be required to attend job interview(s) arranged by the participating employer(s). Participating employer may select an applicant based on their academic attainment as well as interview performance.

About interns
 
1.  When does the Summer Internship Programme start and end?
The Summer Internship Programme (SIP) runs between June and August.
 
2.  What is the duration of the whole internship period?
The internship period lasts not more than three consecutive months.
 
3.  Is this a paid internship? If so, how much can I expect?
Yes.  The remuneration depends on the offer made by different employers.
 
4.  How many working hours do I have to work each week?
Working hours depend on the terms and conditions set out in your employment contract.  You will generally work within 9:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday.
 
5.  What companies are offering internship opportunities?
Participating companies consist of the registered insurance company, and licensed insurance brokerage company and professional intermediaries company under the Insurance Authority.  Please refer to the participating company list for details.
 
6.  What job positions can I expect from the internship? Will I be placed in any sales or front-line positions?
The SIP offers middle- and back-office positions of the insurance industry.  Sales or front-line positions are excluded.
 
7.  How do I know am I eligible for the SIP?
You should make an application only if you are a resident of HKSAR and lawfully employable in Hong Kong*.  You should be also an undergraduate or postgraduate student who enrolled in a fulltime accredited programme provided by a local education institution, or a sub-degree final year student who received a conditional offer from a full-time locally accredited degree programme.
 
*Non-local students studying full-time locally-accredited local or non-local programmes at undergraduate or postgraduate level, or full-time locally-accredited local programmes at sub-degree level, may take up internship subject to the required conditions set out in paragraphs 20 to 24 of the “Guidebook for Entry for Study in Hong Kong”, which can be downloaded at the Immigration Department's website (www.immd.gov.hk/eng/forms/forms/id-e-996.html).
 
8.  Can I apply for more than one job position at the same time? Is the SIP limited to specific majors?
You can make up to three choices on job preference and accept only one employment offer in an application.  The SIP welcomes students from any disciplines to apply.
 
9.  Can I apply if I am not a permanent resident of HKSAR?
Yes.  Applications from non-permanent residents of HKSAR are welcomed.
 
10.  How to apply for the SIP?
You are required to submit the application form together with resume, cover letter(s), and copies of student card and all academic transcripts to Vocational Training Council by post or by email before the application deadline.  The application form can be downloaded at this website.
 
11.  When does the application for SIP open and close?
In general, application for interns is open from January to March each year.  Please refer to the details of SIP for the exact dates.
 
12.  What is the selection process and when would I know the result?
Your application details will be passed to the selected company according to your job preference in the application, and you may be invited to attend a job interview by the selected company during the selection process. You will be informed of the interview result by phone or by email, subject to the arrangement of the company, prior to the commencement of the internship.
 
13.  Can I withdraw from the SIP during the course of the internship? Would I be offered remuneration in this case?
You should inform the employer in writing according to the notice period set out in the employment contract in order to withdraw from the SIP.  The salary to be paid by the employer will be calculated on a pro-rata basis based on the actual period you have worked for the employer.
 
14.  I have successfully completed the SIP this summer.  Can I apply again next summer?
Yes. However, please note that you cannot apply for the same position offered by the same employer you have worked for in your subsequent application.
 
About employers
 
15.  How much is the government subsidy and when would my company receive it?
The Government will subsidise 80% or HK$8,000 (whichever is lower) of intern's monthly remuneration. The monthly remuneration is paid to the intern by your company and the subsidy will be reimbursed to your company directly upon completion of the internship.
 
16.  Can any company join the SIP?
The SIP accepts application from those companies carrying on insurance business, that includes registered insurance company, licensed insurance brokerage company or professional intermediary company under the Insurance Authority.
 
17.  What is my responsibility in the SIP as an employer?
You shall conduct interview for recruiting interns, fill-in and return the Applicant Interview Report provided by VTC.  You shall enter into an employment contract of up to three consecutive months and provide monthly honorarium and mentorship, if applicable, to the intern, and please submit a copy of the employment contract to VTC. You shall also submit the completed Intern Appraisal Report provided by VTC and a copy of payroll record after the internship period for verification.
 
18.  How can my company apply for the Government subsidy upon intern's completion of an employment contract?
In order to apply for the Government subsidy, your company should submit the completed Intern Appraisal Form provided by VTC proving the intern has attained a minimum of 80% attendance, and a copy of payroll record upon completion of employment contract. VTC shall disburse the subisdy to your company within 30 days upon receipt of said documents.
